The building that previously was Perkins in Cambridge is empty but has caught the eye of big potential buyers, one of which is Chipotle. The building site Administrator, Evan Vogel, was conscientious about who would alter the Perkins in town and ensured everything was running smoothly.
The city officials have revealed that a new developer has purchased the old Perkins building and the land; they will first demolish the vacant restaurant and then replace it with at least two new buildings on the site. One building will house a Chipotle restaurant. The other business is to be an Automotive Tire Service Center. A third portion of the site is a yet-to-be-determined business. Though I don’t know exactly when Perkins was originally in Cambridge, it sure has been here a long time, and it’s good to know that there are more things to look forward to in the future about the different stores that are coming into our town.
North Branch already has a Chipotle gaining much attention since they moved to that location. The restaurant for them was said to have opened on November 21, 2023, and has received many customers.
It was likely understandable that Cambridge would be getting a Chipotle, too, since the restaurant has become a big hit. Even though there will be other companies around, the new Chipotle seems to be a much healthier choice than the others.
In some local opinions, one person stated,
“It is kinda weird to have another tire company and it is unsanitary to have such chemicals close to a restaurant” -M.H.
Another local resident said, “There are too many food companies in town, and they should just better upgrade the ones we have, rather than just take up more space.” -J
In my opinion, this is valid reasoning. I believe we can use more food restaurants. We need another store that interests people so they will drive hours to go there. For instance, we have a lot of dollar stores and fast food restaurants already. Instead of more of the same stores, we could add a JCPenny, a Barnes and Noble, or even a Lowe’s. It can be something other than these exact stores, but it would be nice to change it up more if we must have new stores in Cambridge.
There are important things to consider, but in the end, it is quite exciting to have some new stores replacing the old Perkins. Having these restaurants close to us will surely give more students a higher chance of job opportunities than just a gas station, a fast-food buffet, or a fast-food drive-thru.
Some local townspeople have said many things about Chipotle coming to town. Ms. Olander said,” I liked Perkins a lot more. I wish we had something similar to it. We need more calmer restaurants than just fast food places in town.” A student at the High School said, “I will still go to Taco Bell, but I guess it’s cool.” A close friend of mine said, “It’s amazing and cool to know that we will have a Chipotle; I will eat there every day.” The last person I spoke to said, “I love Chipotle, and I am happy to know it is closer to town.”
This is still a new thing, and the town is already intrigued. They have
yet to decide on a specific timeline for the demolition of Perkins. Also, the construction of Chipotle has yet to be announced, but the anticipation is intense in the town. We have yet to determine the exact date Perkins will be replaced, but it’s hoped to begin building this year between 2024 and 2025. This is going to be very exciting for everyone.
