Some awesome theater students, along with Viva Anderson, a fantastic Three-Act theater director, have spent three long months creating the new performance “Alice Adventures In Wonderland. ”
Today, I would love to share the dedication that everyone has been a part of in making this an incredible show performance that will be happening for everyone to see this coming weekend.
The cast of the theater students involves many people you may or may not know. However, many seniors and freshmen work all night and practice all day. Everyone has a set director named Tim on the job, teaching many of the students working behind the scenes during the performance.
I have spent three months with the entire crew, and I was also a part of the performance. We have all played many fun games to keep our brains moving instead of worrying so much about the reaction that will happen soon with the audience. The games we played were Zip Zap Zop, Taxi, and Freeze. In my opinion, Zip Zap Zop was the most stressful because you had to keep your eyes and ears open to 22 cast members.
After the warmups, we carried around many books to remember our characters’ lines until we no longer needed them. Some lines took us longer to remember because we were in more than one scene or had more than one character to play. The fun part was seeing a few of the characters running or being very
expressive with our parts.
Our director, Viva, has been very helpful and flexible the entire way through. She always helps us remember to have fun, and she helps to lift people’s spirits. Viva is a very expressive person who gives good advice and always thinks on her feet. She has very good friends who are helping make the sounds in the performance and has a new way to use lighting for the background and characters. I am very thankful that Viva is our director and proud to know every idea she shares with all of the cast and crew.
The theme for the performance is different from the other Alice story that you might know. This performance is going to have a steampunk and circus-like feeling. We have many props and places in the performance for the characters that will be funny, and it is hard to get bored with this play. The costumes have many pockets and details that bring more character to every performer.
The tech students and their director, Tim, set the stage. Tim and the techs planted every detail on stage and even some sets that were much bigger than before. Stents are the big cupcakes, tea cups, and mushrooms. Even a few props that are made are so enormous that they can make them truly magical and much easier for the audience in the back to see.
The tech students and performers also make the sounds. In this play, the techs even make some new magical sounds.
The lighting that will happen on stage is all improvised and changes each time is set to go with the lights that some of the cast members will use. The light is in the background, with at least one person each time someone’s hands move off the slope. A few of my friends will be working with the magic of lights. The lighting they use also changes the vibe of the environment, as well as the different scenes in the Alice Adventures intro.
A few characters you will see are royalty, garden plants, or animals. Only a few will be in human characters like the Mad Hatter. There is a lot of audience interaction in this performance as well. Some of the characters might say something to you or do a jester, or they might be even closer to the audience during an act in the play.
This performance has brought out a lot of the best in our crew; everyone has shown so much support for each other. We hope it brings laughter to all who come to see it. If you look closely, you will know the joy that this performance has brought to the performers as well. We worked so hard to have a lot of fun on this performance, and we would all be delighted for you to see the play this coming weekend on April 12th, 13th, and 14th in the PAC; there’s more information on the posters all around the school, too.
