It seems like summer comes and goes so fast. We can all agree on that. But to welcome you all back and celebrate the new school year, I would like to reflect on the summer and all the experiences that I had.
This is a little different from what I usually write (okay, maybe a lot different), but I have some experiences I would like to share.
But if you’re going to be reading about my summer, I suppose you should know who I am first.
Hi, I’m Averee O’Leary. I’m a sophomore this year, and while I miss summer, I am excited to move on with my life. All good things come to an end and all that.
All jokes aside, I’ll start with softball. Softball means a lot to me and was a big part of my life this summer, always running around to get to games and all that (I’m sure anyone who plays a sport can relate to that). My team ended up getting 3rd and 4th in two of our tournaments and placed 9th at state. That took up most of my summer, running all the way to the end of July.
After that, August flew by. I went up to Lake Geneva for a week with family, to Duluth and Gooseberry Falls, and, the big finale, to New York City with my Grandmother, and that was easily one of the best vacations of my life.
If you know anything about me, you will know I love musical theatre. It’s been one of my favorite things since the first time I was in a show when I was eight.
So, imagine my excitement when I got the opportunity to see Wicked on Broadway. If you don’t know what Wicked is, it’s about the Wicked Witch of the West and how she truly became “Wicked.” It has been on Broadway for 20 years and is known as one of the best musicals of all time.
Those descriptions don’t even do justice to seeing them in person. I know this can come off as me being a dork about a stage play, but it is an art form that deserves respect.
Seeing Wicked was easily the best part of my summer, and I don’t think any of my descriptions would do it justice. Even if you don’t get the chance to see Wicked or another Broadway show, I would definitely go see the shows that the school and the community theatre do because they do amazing work.
That was just a snapshot of my summer. Not everything, of course, but I wanted to reflect on this lovely summer and carry those joyful memories of going into the school year.
So, on behalf of myself and the newspaper, hope you had an amazing summer, and welcome back!
