Get ready for an amazing school year.
Officer Kevin Gross, the trusted school resource officer, is back to keep the peace and build
relationships with students. And this year, he’s not alone. Meet Jack, the Cambridge Police
Department’s therapy dog, here to bring comfort and joy to the students and staff.
Together, Kevin and Jack are ready to make a positive impact on the school community.
Let’s give them a warm welcome.
“Being a school resource officer gives me the opportunity to help many different people,
whether that’s staff, students, parents, help them to solve the dilemmas they may be
facing, in their lives”.
Kevin loves being an SRO because he gets to build relationships with
students and be a positive influence in their lives.
“Our NASRO, which is the National Association for School Resource Officers, they have a triad. And honestly, law enforcement is like the bottom 10% of that of what you’re doing. Obviously, that’s part of my job, and I will do that when needed. But there’s the role of mentor, counselor, teacher, to kind of help, whether I’m in a class, helping kids learn that way from law enforcement lenses. Just being there to help. He’s Jack. He’s a dog, and he doesn’t have to say anything. And I saw him the first day of school, as kids were coming in, their faces were lighting up when
they’d see him. Students that I never even had contact with, and they would just glow. You could see their accountants change from when they’d walk into the building. They would just light up,
beaming with joy, like when they see him and pet him. He doesn’t have to say a word. That’s
great. And I think that helps me to build a relationship with the students, staff, just kind of bridge a gap there, maybe, so to speak. Because maybe they normally wouldn’t contact me, but because of the dog, we get to have that connection and get to build off of that, which I think is great.”
Let’s give Kevin and Jack a big welcome back. And let’s make
this school year one to remember.
Go Big Blue!
