Every year, more than 70% of Americans celebrate Halloween, and those 70% spend around 3.6 billion dollars on candy. But the question that is rarely raised is what candies are sold the most. That is why I will rank the top 8 most purchased candies, going from least purchased to most purchased.
#8: Milky Way
Milky Way candy bars are made from nougat, topped with caramel, and covered with milk chocolate. They were created in 1923 by Frank C. Mars and originally manufactured in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Despite popular belief, the Milky Way was named after the popular malted milkshake of the day, not after the galaxy.
#7: Hershey’s Milk Chocolate
Milton Hershey had an affection for sweet delicacies from a young age. His passion for sweets led him to create The Hershey Chocolate Company in 1894, which subsequently led to the birth of the Hershey’s Milk Chocolate Bar. Hershey’s Milk Chocolate has been praised for being one of the only milk chocolate brands in the world that still uses fresh milk in its production.
#6: Kit Kat
The Kit Kat was created in 1935 in York after an employee suggested “a chocolate bar that a man could bring to work in his pack up.” The Kit Kat was designed for exactly that: to give workers a quick snack during break. It quickly became popular because it was small and easy to carry, and it was widely adored for its unique texture and delectable taste.
#5: Twix
Twix is widely appreciated in America for its delectable taste and satisfying crunch. The brand was first created in the United Kingdom in 1967 and introduced in the United States in 1979. After its introduction, it quickly became one of the most popular candies in America.
#4: Peanut M&Ms
Peanut M&Ms were introduced on May 16, 1954. Once introduced, they quickly rose to popularity due to their solid texture, which complimented the smooth flavor of the chocolate. The marketing also helped with the popularity of the peanut M&Ms, as the yellow M&M mascot was chosen to represent them. This bolstered the popularity of the candy immensely.
#3: Snickers
Snickers was created by the candy company Mars. The Snickers bar was named after the Mars family’s favorite horse and was first introduced to the public in 1930. Snickers quickly became popular because it was one of the only candy bars at the time to include nuts and chocolate, which made it unique to the market. Ever since Snickers’s beginning, it has remained the highest-selling candy bar in the world.
#2: Original M&M’S
M&Ms were first introduced into the United States in 1941. After so many years, the original M&Ms are still considered the second-highest-selling candy in America. M&M has remained such a popular candy because of many things, one of them being that it has great brand recognition thanks to the beloved candy’s recognizable mascots. M&M also benefits from not being a candy bar because not being a candy bar sets it apart from the main competition.
#1 Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups
Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups is the world’s most purchased candy during Halloween. This immaculate candy was first made in 1928 by H.B. Reese. Reese was an employee of the Hershey Company; during his time at the company, he created Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups in his basement. The Hershey Company commended Reese’s work and supplied him with the chocolate coating for his candy. The Hershey Company eventually purchased his business in 1963. After all this time, Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups remains incredibly popular because it is the first of its kind to combine peanut butter and chocolate; this was revolutionary at its inception and allowed Reese to create one of the most beloved candies ever created. The ingenious design of the Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup is why it is considered the king of all candies.
