Many individuals who aren’t in Band or choir assume it could be a waste of time and can’t help you. After some research, I discovered that Band and choir can be very helpful in developing cognitive skills. A few abilities that may be helped with music include memory, problem-solving skills, or even math abilities! Mr Knudsvig agrees that ¨ Music has a blend of all subjects¨. Mr. Kennedy says ¨ Kids need a creative outlet, and Band is a great way to get that creativity. Being in Band or choir additionally improves self-assurance. Mr Kennedy says ¨ Kids become more confident. I have seen kids go from not knowing a piece to being able to play it at a high level¨. It has been demonstrated that children turn out to be extra confident when appearing in front of audiences. Another advantage is that they learn teamwork. When you are in a Band or choir, you need to no longer think about simply yourself but the group as a whole. It has also been verified that playing an instrument or singing can help reduce stress by 61%! As a kid in Band and choir, I will say that whenever I’m feeling stressed or no longer in a great mood, I always like to play my trumpet for some time or sing my favorite songs from musicals. Another benefit is that it teaches students better hand-eye coordination. Playing an instrument requires examining your sheet music while playing the proper notes. You are also required to concentrate extra. Another way playing an instrument can help you is it is able to better your respiratory system. Singing and playing in Band can also make you feel more accomplished. Not only that, in addition they help you connect with students from different backgrounds. It allows you to branch out and speak to people you usually wouldn’t. I can speak from experience and say that my friendships with the Band and choir have lasted many years and have helped me become extra outgoing!
As someone who has been in Band and choir for nearly four years, I have noticed a change in my mental health. They’ve both played a big role in how I am today. It has taught me how to open up and not be afraid to speak in front of large crowds. It has also helped me become a better track runner because it has allowed me to breathe better. It has also helped me grow to be better with time management. The choir has fixed my posture. When singing, your back needs to be straight so the sound comes out nicely. One way that they’ve helped me, It has changed my mind-set. The Band has taught me that after I do not get something right the first time, I can keep training and, in the end, get better. Mr Knudsvig says, ¨ Music is essential to who we are. We can’t go daily without listening to at least one song¨. I agree. Music is a huge part of our generation, making us who we are. I know me especially; I’m constantly listening to music, whether it’s while doing work or just sitting around.
Here are a few fun musical facts! Did you know that former President Bill Clinton can play the saxophone? He even said that ¨I never stopped loving music. It taught me both discipline and creativity. It taught me to be an individual and how to play on a team. It taught me how to take initiative and be patient¨ He started playing saxophone at nine years old! He even remembers how his band and choir directors treated him! Mr Kennedy started playing Piano at 4! He and Knudsvig have been in Band and Choir since 5th grade! So, when you’re bored and have nothing to do, learn an instrument or take singing lessons. Many people have proven that Band and choir help you academically and improve your mental and physical health. These benefits are not just for the present, but they also shape your future, as evidenced by the successful individuals who have benefited from music education.
